Who is eligible to apply?

The 2012-2013 cohort is open first and foremost to senior managers inside and outside the field with the passion and potential to be a more effective leader and/or to work as a CEO or COO within a science center, children's museum, or related institution.  Existing CEO's early in their careers in the field may be considered, based on their possible fit with the senior managers admitted to this year's program.

Eligibility includes the ability to engage in a rigorous leadership development experience – spending approximately 20 days in direct NLI activities (retreats, audio conferences, individualized coaching, and preparation) over the course of the program year. Taking into consideration the parallel work on an institutionally-focused strategic initiative, participants typically engage in some aspect of NLI approximately 4-5 hours per week, on average, throughout the program year. Applicants whose responsibilities will not allow this time commitment, or the ability to attend all three retreats in full (see Retreat Outline) ought to consider applying in another year. Admission to the program assumes candidates already have a working knowledge of management and the science center or children’s museum field.

How are participants selected?

Participants are selected through a competitive process. There are no restrictions based on institutional or community size or location. A selection committee, composed of professionals representing the science center field and executive education, will evaluate each application based on a combination of the following criteria:

    • Currently in a senior position in a science center or children's museum, or a closely related informal science learning institution
    • Experience at senior management levels – managing others through projects, networks, and partnerships
    • Demonstrates skills in problem solving, original thinking, and discovering alternate options and solutions to challenges
    • Willingness to work collaboratively with others and explore new ideas
    • Capacity to envision and effect innovation and change in one’s organization and community, and over time, in the field
    • Articulation of a compelling strategic initiative that will lead to positive impact in one’s community and serve as a learning laboratory for applying new lessons about leadership during the program year
    • Investment in community causes beyond the science center
    • Motivation to learn and stretch and think broadly and strategically
    • Fire-in-the-belly to be a more effective leader
    • Evidence of commitment to the science-technology center and museum world
    • Opportunity for the candidate’s institution and community to benefit
    • Institutional and community support for the candidate, including the identification and commitment of a strong sponsor to participate with the candidate in parts of the program and guide their pursuit of an identified strategic initiative

The selection process strives to include participants from diverse backgrounds globally to promote lively, useful interchange among people with common goals but differing perspectives. However, a strong command of written and spoken English is required.

Tuition

Tuition is $5,000; Fellows also pay their travel costs to and from the retreats, and for telephone calls with their coaches. A limited number of needs-based tuition scholarships are available. NLI and the program funders invest over $50,000 per Fellow, which covers instruction, consultations, executive coaching, group conference calls, and food and lodging at each retreat.
