PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The Silicon Valley Mathematics Initiative offers the following professional development opportunities for our member school districts.

FiMC MIDDLE SCHOOL SESSION

A project to support middle and high school teachers with activities such as, designing effective lessons, analyzing student work and performance assessments, re-designing math engagement lessons and lesson study.

FiMC ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SESSION

These monthly sessions will support grades 3-5 teachers' math content, pedagoy and assessment knowledge.

FiMC PRINCIPAL MEETINGS

This set of meetings is open to the principals and math coaches of the fourteen middle schools (including K-8) in the FiMC.

FiMC LEADERSHIP MEETINGS

This set of meetings is open to the Superintendents, Curriculum and Instruction leaders, and math coaches of the districts in FiMC.

COACHING INSTITUTE

Initial summer professional development for teachers to introduce them to the coaching experience.

GENERAL MAC MEETINGS

Meetings of district administrators and math coaches to review the MARS performance assessment, discuss administrative policies, and review preliminary results of the assessment.

LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE

Intensive training in math content and pedagogy for coaches and emerging district leaders during the spring and summer.

LESSON STUDY

Teams of teachers collaborate with a math coach to research, plan, teach and/or observe, and analyze mathematics lessons

SVMI PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT MEETINGS

Monthly professional development for coaches and teams of teachers, including training on findings from the MARS performance assessment.

MAC RELATED EVENTS

Training for new scorers, scoring leaders, and coaches on the MARS performance assessment.

MATH NETWORK MEETINGS 

Professional development for math coaches on math content, teaching strategies, and learning theory.

PUTTING RESEARCH INTO ACTION

This is an option designed for people who have been involved in SVMI professional development in the past and are interested in going more deeply into students thinking through classroom research.
